Weekly Classes for August 2010
Mirrored studio, drinking water, qualified and experienced teachers – YOUR BODY LOVES IT! . . . Pilates
EVERY week at The Gym, Mooragh Promenade, Ramsey £9.00 non members £6.50 members/OAPs Pilates Classes run by Suzanne Young (owner of The Gym, level III Personal Trainer and Fully Qualified Pilates Teacher). Supported by Claire Kinrade @ The Gym and Elizabeth Main @ The Gym and in Patrick.
It is a requirement before undertaking ANY exercise that the teacher is aware of your medical and physical background. Before joining the class a questionnaire must be completed. Anything that crops up on the questionnaire needs discussing with the teacher prior to exercise and it may be necessary to obtain your medical practitioner's advice/approval before you can join the class. It is recommended that you have a private session or attend a introductory group session class prior to joining an established class. This is to ensure your posture and medical background may be understood by the teacher and to give you an introduction to the Pilates technique. We take between approx 10 people per class and most spaces are booked in advance so to be sure of a space in your preferred class please return the appropriate form if unsure or for more information please call Suzanne - 812100
What do the classes involve? There are usually 12 people per class (all mats and equipment are provided). Classes start promptly so you should arrive at least 5 minutes before to give you time to remove outdoor coats and shoes and to settle on your mat. The class will start with a few gentle mobilising/relaxation exercises to get the mind and body prepared and allow unnecessary tension to release. The teacher will guide you through finding your optimum postural alignment, and through finding your breath (which for Pilates is a lateral and thoracic). The teacher will then lead by demonstration and description - a series of Pilates based exercises. The class will always include stability exercises for the pelvis, strengthening exercises for the abdomen, mobility and lengthening exercises for the spine. Often classical Pilates exercises will be included in the class and sometimes equipment such as bands, balls, weights, rolls, isotoners, barrels, arcs, sitfits will complement the routine. Some people may be drawn to Pilates due to requiring rehabilitation or because they have very individual issues with muscular-skeletal pain or postural problems. In these circumstances you are directed to the trained therapists that work in The Clinic above The Gym. It is not recommended that you join in the matwork classes when Group Pilates is not suitable for your individual condition and you would benefit more from 121 therapies. Please see The Clinic for details of the rehabilitation, acupuncture, healing and massage therapies available from our premises. Advice if thinking of joining …One of the teacher's favourite sayings in the class is ‘its how you get there not where you go' which is the same as saying ‘less is more'. You do not want to try too hard in the class and you must never go beyond your ability. You are working from the inside – so when doing Pilates correctly it is subtle, unhurried and 'mindful' – you will learn how to move from your centre and you will re-program movement patterns and muscle recruitment. Pilates is not just “a great exercise class for your stomach muscles” , it's a total mind and body conditioning technique which requires concentration, awareness and commitment. ‘PHYSICAL FITNESS IS THE ATTAINMENT AND MAINTAINANCE OF A UNIFORMLY DEVELPOED BODY WITH A SOUND MIND FULLY CAPABLE OF NATURALLY, EASILY AND SATISFACTORILY PERFORMING OUR MANY VARIED DAILY TASKS WITH SPONTANEOUS ZEST AND PLEASURE' – Joseph Pilates on what will make you happy Suzanne, the Teacher Suzanne was born on the Isle of Man and educated at the Buchan School . After University and an 8 year career in Finance Suzanne bought a gym in Ramsey in 2002. She then set about a complete lifestyle change, renovation and expansion project which is still ongoing… Suzanne's Pilates qualifications and experience - Having qualified with FutureFit (OCR accredited and one of the leading Fitness Industry Training providers) Suzanne became a fully qualified Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer. Suzanne then trained with FutureFit to become a Pilates Teacher and classes started January 2004 in Ramsey, Braddan and Peel. FutureFit was the first Teacher training provider to be awarded Level 3 status for Pilates Teaching which is currently the highest level of training within the Fitness Industry. Suzanne is trained to teach Advanced level Pilates and now has over 7 years teaching experience on the Isle of Man. ‘The interest in my classes was there from the start, however it was obvious that clients required much more than an exercise class – there were joint problems, weak backs, injured bodies, rehabilitating, athletic, pregnant, young (not so young!) all in one class – it was quite obvious that I really needed to be on top of my training, education, understanding, empathy and teaching skills to continue (let alone develop) at the pace I had started at' So, Suzanne committed to ongoing and more in depth training and developing of her Pilates knowledge and teaching and regularly travels to the UK to work in Pilates studios or undertake a workshop or course. Claire, The Teacher Claire Kinrade entered the health industry as a massage therapist and reflexologist. Having worked at The Gym for a number of years Claire's skillbase naturally evolved into a fitness role and she qualified with as a level II Fitness Instructor in 2007. Claire has always had an interest in yoga and pilates and has attended classes on the Island for many years. In March 2008 Claire trained with FutureFit the leading industry fitness provider for fitness training and became a fully qualified and OCR accredited Pilates teacher. The origin of Pilates Pilates is a mental and physical conditioning technique based on the work principles of the late Joseph Pilates. Joseph Pilates would do mat-based and studio-equipment work with his clients, adapting his 35+ classical ‘full mat' exercises depending on whom he was training at the time. Since his death in 1967 adaptations and interpretations of his work have brought modern Pilates to be the popular technique that we hear of today at the gym, in magazines, on TV.
